Blockchain works on the concept of peer-to-peer network it is a decentralised system that further works on distributed ledgers which means any transaction is copied onto all the nodes and their ledgers. All the nodes work on a concept known as consensus where they agreed to the fact that all the transactions will be visible to all of them and that if any new transaction occurs one of them is going to verify it. Any change in previous records can be detected by all the members of the network and such change is usually not allowed. The entire process of changing any old transaction is very cumbersome and requires the consensus of a majority of the notes in the network.

Blockchain works on the concept of blocks of hash of nodes and of proof of work. These concepts make the Blockchain network immutable or one can say that non-modifiable details of each block can neither be modified nor deleted. Figure $10.1$ shows a simple Blockchain and its structure.

There are various types of blockchains. The most popular way of distinguishing types of blockchains are Public Blockchain, Private Blockchain, and Federated Blockchain.

Blockchain can provide a base where it will give a uniform standard or a uniform access and authorization to all electronic health information. It can be said here that public Blockchain cannot be used in healthcare services because the data that is distributed, needs to be within a very closed private circle. So, usually private Blockchain is used in healthcare systems globally. Another important aspect is to keep the Blockchain technology secure and protected from hackers. This is because information security in health care systems is very important and attacks are very frequent (Tanwar et al., 2020).

While using Blockchain technology it should be kept in mind that data is immutable in Blockchain and therefore whatever data keeps changing very fast and frequently should be avoided and should be kept out of the chain.
The need to have Blockchain technology in the healthcare system over the traditional method of keeping records is mostly because of the decentralized management and immutable databases. Blockchain also helps in tracing data and keeping data away from unauthorized users.
